Punk rock princesses: Rooney Mara and Nicole Richie led the glamour on the red carpet at the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night

It was an unusual choice for the theme of this year's Met Gala as the star attendee's were asked to go punk.
While many of the guests still stuck to pretty princess dresses, Miley Cyrus, Rooney Mara, Nicole Richie and Sienna Miller all took the theme rather seriously.
Nicole and Rooney both chose white dresses for the Vogue event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, but added dramatic touches when it came to their hair and make-up.

With all of her tattoos and piercings, her character of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon tattoo had a punk edge, so the theme of the ball was no doubt a breeze for actress Rooney.
The 28-year-old star slipped into a plunging white Givenchy lace zipper dress for the event, and contrasted her the frock with lashings of almost black lipstick.
The monochrome hues complemented her alabaster skin tone and dark brown locks.

Fashion favourite: Sienna Miller stole the show in her slinky white dress teamed with studded jacket and headband

Revelling in it: Miley Cyrus clearly loved the opportunity to go pink in a fishnet dress and spiked hair

She accesorised with a pair of sky-high white leather stilettos featuring gold buckle accents.
Not only did her gown flash plenty of her decolletage, but the almost Spanish-style ruffles on the hem dipped up her thighs displaying her slender pins.
Meanwhile Nicole went all-out by dying her tresses a shock of bright white, which matched her long-sleeved and lacy gown which clung to her petite frame.

Going all out: Sarah Jessica Parker, in a Giles Deacon dress, Philip Treacy headpiece and Louis Vuitton boots, put all the other guests to shame with her amazing and elaborate outfit

Queen Katy: Miss Perry looked amazing in a crown, religious inspired dress and vampish lipstick

Blonde ambition: Anne Hathaway showed a rare edgy side to herself in a racy dress and with newly bleached blonde hair

It's a match: Kim Kardashian, who has preciously been banned from the event, wore a floral dress with matching gloves and shoes as she posed up with boyfriend Kanye West

Pretty and punky: Rose Huntington-Whiteley managed to stick to the theme while still looking very feminine in her glamorous Gucci creation

That's the spirit: In her tartan dress, fishnet tights and platform shoes, Christina Ricci nailed the theme

Hitting a bum note: Madonna wore a wig but easily stood out in her tartan jacket and fishnets which left her derriere on show

Skin on show: With her very low-cut dress which had a sexy side split, Beyonce was showing a lot of flesh on the red carpet

A new look: Taylor Swift did her best punk impersonation in a spiderweb lacy dress by J Mendel and a pink streak in her crimped hair
